Small Black Stories
The Small Black Stories Project continues to be an exploration of the symbolic meaning present in all things. The Book of Small Black Stories (2013-2018) was the first volume, exploring slow motion video, mostly in Philadelphia. In this 5-part volume of stories beginning in 2020 (this archive spans work from 2022 to 2024), an illimitable journey through Brooklyn uncovers humble street detritus as powerful tools of divination. When paired with the lyrical and melodic phrasings of Black and soul-derived music, they become a decoded scroll, giving answers to questions unknown and unasked, and purpose to the ostensibly meaningless.
Small Black Stories is an ongoing project, posted semi-regularly to my Instagram page (@smallblackstories). [They’re also embedded throughout my work in The Institutional Memory of Valerie Caesar, also an ongoing work, comprising of 6 volumes and as many years worth of personal archives, in a daily diary format, and available by membership only.]
